Object Maker Aotearoa Fellowship 2024

This year I was fortunate enough to be selected to take part in the inaugural Object Maker Aotearoa Fellowship 2024. This is a new initiative funded by Creative New Zealand.

The year has flown by and the ten selected artists are gearing up for an exhibition of our processed-based work. This will be held at The Depot Gallery in Devonport, Auckland, from 23 November - 14 December 2024.

When mistakes happen opportunities arise. The collapse of one idea can lead to new thoughts worth pursuing.

It takes something to break before you can make something new.

This work was created entirely out of screw ups and their resolution. It evidences the interface between my own internal thought processes and the physical world.

White Trash #40, The See Here Gallery, April 2022

This work is part of an ongoing series called White Trash.

Old ceramic shards of varied origins are gathered from the Wellington coastline and incorporated into a new ceramic form.

“In creating this piece I examine the concept that change is constant, and attempt to make work which spans both time and place.”

Transition, The See Here, Festival of the Arts:Textile Adjacent, 2022

Time like many textile processes can be viewed as linear, cyclical, repetitive or layered. Incremental moments are bound together as we weave our own unique version of life’s rich tapestry. Change is constant. This work is an attempt to document an incremental transition during which I, as the maker, have traded beauty for wisdom and in doing so have become more accustomed to wearing the crown of a crone. To date this work remains unfinished…

First Impressions; Making my mark(s)

Clay with my finger print impressions in response to discovering the finger prints of a brick maker on a brick from a Victorian era building. Across time, same place…

White Trash, The See Here Gallery, November 2020

The starting point for this body of work is at what is frequently perceived to be the end of a ceramic object’s life. Devoid of function, value and aesthetic these sea worn shards were gathered from Wellington’s South Coast. Each one contains small clues as to how, when and where the object to which it belonged was made. In gathering them up and refining them into new vessel forms I attempt to give new life to old things and create objects which transcend both time and place.
